The Gujarat Connection is a free internet-based education programme for New Zealand primary, intermediate and secondary schools.

The programme features World Vision's work helping survivors of an earthquake in Gujarat State, India. We aim to bring students into contact with World Vision workers and community members in Gujarat, and to help schools make their 40 Hour Famine programmes even more exciting and relevant to students.

The programme was live from 1st to 31st March 2002, and the site will now remain indefinitely as a resource for teachers

During March 2002, children heard from a New Zealand teacher, Paul Kelly, as he travelled in Gujarat, visiting families and observing World Vision's work there. They learned about daily life in Gujarat and about the impact of the January 2001 earthquake there, through:
    •     Daily stories and photos on the internet site in Latest News
    •     Weekly faxes and audioconferences under Latest News
    •     The chance to ask questions of the visiting teacher in Ask Paul, and communicate with children in Gujarat in Get in Touch.
    •     The chance to discuss issues of relief and rehabilitation with children in New Zealand and India in Discuss the Issues.
    •     Both teachers and students could share Classroom Ideas and send in photos of their school activities around the Gujarat Connection.

The Gujarat Connection forms the basis for an integrated Social Studies unit, with sections suitable for levels 2 to 7 (year 3 to 12). The unit can be used alone, or teamed with the World Vision resource set on the Gujarat earthquake.
