1. In Week One you will need about one hour to introduce the topic, set up groups and roles, discuss the premise of the game and read the first week’s questions. You will need a second slot of about an hour to look through the website and poster for information, and design organisation logos. At the end of the week you will need 10 to 15 minutes to input group answers.

2. In Weeks Two, Three and Four you will need about one hour to work through the decisions and do any extra work, and then 10 to 30 minutes to input answers, scan and email extra work.

3. Assign group roles that change each week for checking the email daily, inputting answers, scanning and sending extra work.

4. To save classroom time, assign extra work on logos, posters etc for homework.

5. Play the game yourself the term before you want to use it to get a feel for the content. The questions can be answered quickly, only once, or not at all.

6. Use the Gujarat Connection website for background information. These sections are most relevant to the game.

  • Natural disasters > Gujarat Quake
  • Disaster relief > Gujarat relief
  • Rebuilding
  • Behind the scenes
  • Classroom ideas > Students’ work
  • Teacher ideas

7. Request the free “After Shock” poster from our online catalogue.

8. The decisions are complex but the multi-choice answers mean that most students can have a go.

9. With social decision-making, time for discussion and reflection is important.

10. The game is fictitious but the scoring is based on World Vision’s experiences after the Gujarat earthquake.

11. There is no list of right and wrong answers. Decisions in one week affect the score for later questions. As with real life, it is difficult knowing if you are doing the right thing!
