1. Classroom Tips
1. Play the EQ game yourself the term before you want to use it to get a feel for the content. The questions can be answered quickly, for only one week, or not at all.
2. Request the free Responding to Disasters poster from our education shop.
3. View more resources: www.worldvision.org.nz/disasters
- Responding to Disasters poster notes pdf
- Responding to Disasters poster jpgs
- Video clips
- DVDS and other World Vision resources
- Disaster web links and pdfs
4. In Week One you will need about one hour to introduce the topic, set up groups and roles, discuss the premise of the game and read the first week’s questions. You will need a second slot of about an hour to look through the website and poster for information, and design organisation logos. At the end of the week you will need 10 to 15 minutes to input group answers.
5. In Weeks Two, Three and Four you will need about one hour to work through the decisions and do any extra work, and then 10 to 30 minutes to input answers, scan and email extra work.
6. Assign group roles that change each week for checking the email daily, inputting answers, scanning and sending extra work.
7. To save classroom time, assign extra work on logos, posters etc for homework.
8. The decisions are complex but the multi-choice answers mean that most students can have a go.
9. With social decision-making, time for discussion and reflection is important.
10. EQ is based on the devastating earthquake in Gujarat, India, in 2001. The game draws on World Vision’s extensive experience in relief and fundraising work to provide an authentic simulation experience.
11. There is no list of right and wrong answers. Decisions in one week affect the score for later questions. As with real life, it is difficult knowing if you are doing the right thing!
12. The online game can be used in tandem with the EQ game pack played over four weeks. Register players or teams online but use the offline game pages in the classroom for decision-making and media reports. Enter player decisions online each week with the points being calculated automatically and results displayed on the leader board.
