Meeting long-term needs, such as rebuilding, often costs more than addressing urgent needs, such as food and water, so there is not enough money to do everything. In Gujarat, World Vision has chosen to focus their rehabilitation project on twenty villages, a total of 34,000 people.

Experienced development staff worked with the people to prioritise the problems that most impact their lives and to plan how to make long-term improvements. The resulting rehabilitation programme has six key areas; agriculture, reconstruction, incomes, water and sanitation, health, and education.

World Vision will be helping for two years, until November 2003. Money raised for the earthquake appeal will be used carefully over this time.
